South Pasadena

South Pasadena is known for shopping, restaurants, coffee shops, and antiques. It sits astride historic Route 66. The Mission West district is one of Southern California's more charming shopping areas and is frequented by artists, students, celebrities and designers and looks much the same today as it did in the early 20's and 30's. An evening farmer's market attracts visitors and brings the community together near the Gold Line station on Thursdays. The South Pasadena Museum is located in one of the oldest structures still standing in the city, and holds numerous artifacts tracing the history of this area of the San Gabriel Valley. The earliest residents were the Gabrielino Indians. After the Spanish colonized the area, the Gabrielinos were taken into the missions where they were to become independent Spanish citizens. Despite plans to give half of the mission property back to the Indians, very little land was actually returned. Today lively pedestrian friendly commercial areas are filled with historic buildings, compatible with its unique small town feel.

Mission Street / Meridian Avenue Light-Rail Train Grade Crossing Gate Upgrade and Safety Improvement Project:

In 2003, the Metro Gold Line began operating between East Pasadena and Downtown Los Angeles. The line was constructed by the Metro Gold Line Foothill Extension Construction Authority (Construction Authority), and is operated by the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro). Thirteen stations were part of this first segment of the line, including the station at Mission Street and Meridian Avenue in South Pasadena.

Following construction and operation beginning on the line, vehicular safety at the Mission Street and Meridian Avenue grade crossing became a concern.  Because of the unique layout of the Mission/Meridian intersection, it was decided (through collaboration between the City, Construction Authority and CPUC) that the crossing could be improved by reconstructing the northern and western crossing gates. Agreement was reached between the three entities on specific actions to improve safety at the crossing, and the design was reviewed and approved by all three agencies.

In 2010, construction began to complete the following:

  1. Install new crossing gates in alignment with the right-of-way to eliminate the space that exists between the rails and the crossing gates, significantly reducing the possibility of a vehicle stopping in this area.
  2. Install new pedestrian access ramps will be also constructed on the southwest, northwest and northeast corners of the intersection to align with the reconfigured crossing gates.

For questions on the project, please contact the Metro Gold Line representative Sylvia Beltran at (626) 305-7012 or e-mail her at sbeltran@foothillextension.org.
