DECISION DAY UPDATE

Metro Delays Action Until November

Thank you to everyone who attended the Metro Board Meeting on Thursday, June 26, 2008.  It was “big, big, big meeting” to quote Steve Hymon from the Los Angeles Times, and part of that characterization was the overwhelming attendance and participation of Foothill Extension supporters.  We can't thank you enough for being there.

The sum of the meeting outcome, which finally adjourned at approximately 2:20 pm, is that a vote on the Long Range Transportation Plan would be delayed until November, where results of the November elections and the potential passage of the proposed sales tax increase may influence further revision of a Long Range Transportation Plan for the region.  This may remind everyone of the delay a few summers ago when MTA/Metro decided to wait for voter outcome for Proposition 1B.  And so it goes…

How does this impact the Foothill Extension Project?  In terms of federal funding, we will look at the funding cycles but most likely any opportunities for federal funding are further delayed one year.  In relation to the sales tax increase, we are already working to expand the project scope and budget with the legislation.  The bill - - its projects, budgets and expenditure plan - - will be reviewed at the July MTA board meeting.  (Metro generally holds its board meetings on the 4th Thursday of each month. See www.metro.net for schedule.)
